Who knows the power of songs?
Tribes, clans and nations have used
them for centuries to rally enthusiasm. "The Battle Hymn of the
Republic" gave courage to the soldiers of the Civil War. "I Want To
Hold Your Hand" caught every Baby Boomer up in Beatlemania. Young
lovers talk about "our song." Many of us remember being mightily
moved by God by a particular song of worship.
A young lady approached me after a concert a few years ago. She said
"your music kept me alive." I smiled at what I thought was an
exaggeration. She said "no, really, it kept me alive." Then she told
me the story of her family's trouble with suicidal tendencies. Mom
and Dad and six of the eight children in her family had taken their
lives. She and a sister were the only ones remaining. She told me
that when she felt depression coming on her she would put on my music
and that would lift her out of it and into hope. Through our tears I
was aware again of the power of song. "In my life, Lord, be glorified
today."
